Miss Earth 2014: Miss Belgium Emily Vanhoutte

What is your environmental advocacy and why did you choose this?

I choose 4 projects close to my heart:

a. Cleaning beaches. It’s really important because the pollution of the sea starts at the beach. Mainly after the summer, the beach is really strewn with waste. The waste gets into the sea and damage a lot of its inhabitants. The animals eat the waste, they get sick and get into our food chain. There are two important things why I do it: to save the animals and have a healthy life.

b. Taking care of animals. I worked together with Ark Van Pollare who saves chickens from the factory where they lay eggs. He does so because helpless chickens end up at slaughterhouses. Ark Van Pollare gave them a new home where they can live a normal life. I raised a lot of money to invest in houses, food, and medical costs of these chickens.

c. Biking in big cities. For me, it’s better to leave the car at home and ride the bike instead. This reduces air pollution and saves our planet. Big cities offer bikes you can rent for a low price. I promote this because exhaust gases are the main sources of air pollution.

Actually, many people are exposed to exhaust emissions every day in different ways: motor vehicles running on fuel and diesel, trains, ships, electric generators, factories, and plants.

d. Promoting windmills. A windmill is a machine that converts the energy of wind. Green energy is important to save our planet. Clean electricity generated from the wind is important, not just for our future but also for our planet.

What tip can you share to promote this year's theme, Eco Tourism?

Things do not change. We change!
