The 5 best workout songs

Music makes getting through your workout a lot easier. (Thinkstock)

For some (if not most), getting yourself to the gym is already a chore. And finishing about an hour’s worth of exercise seems even harder. Come on, we all know that feeling. So, to get you through that workout, here are some songs to listen to.

Getting into your workout clothes

Folks, this is where the battle is, especially for those who like working out in the morning. It’s tough to get up at the break of dawn. You wonder: why your bed is at its comfiest at this hour?

1. Set your alarm with Jose Gonzalez’s “Step Out.”

Its opening lines “Take a step outside, time to step outside,” with well-choreographed drum beats, will get you in the mood. Other than the fact that it is literally the time to step outside, it’s also time to do something good for your body.

The treadmill songs (or songs you can run with)

A good 15- to 20- minute run is a test of endurance. It’s not how fast you can go but how long you can last.

2. As you start slow, play Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s “Can’t Hold Us.”

The beginning sequence of the song (with Macklemore slowly making you move with his verse, “Hey, hey, let’s go, all right”) is a good start for those baby steps. By the time he starts rapping, you can slowly speed things up a notch or two.

3. Then when you start sweating, a little Nicki Minaj will get you running.

A workout favorite is “Starships.” It’s not as new as Macklemore’s but the line “So give me more, more, more til I can’t stand” will get you pushing further or (because we’re talking about running) farther.

4. Cool down with Feist’s “I Feel It All.”

It’s not too fast but it’s also not too slow. You still need a few good beats to keep you walking and the song’s guitar and drum sequence gives you just that. Feist’s lyrics are good for thinking especially when you’re taking it slow and “feeling it all.”

The lifting song
(or the song you can lift weights or your body weight with)

5. David Guetta’s “Play Hard” will get you pumped.

With beats remastered from Alice Deejay’s “Better Off Alone,” the song will keep you doing those bench presses, repetitive dumbbell lifts or even those vertical pushups against the wall. The lyrics “Work hard, play hard” (sang almost throughout the entire song) will remind you why you’re working out in the first place.
