Director Paul Soriano and Toni Gonzaga have finally decided to take their seven-and-a-half year relationship to the next level.

Paul admitted in an exclusive interview on The Buzz on Sunday, February 1, that he and the singer-actress-host are officially engaged and that the wedding will happen this year.

The director proposed to Toni at 12:30 a.m, at their home, shortly after her 31st birthday.

No idea

“We just came from her birthday dinner,” Paul recalls. “I had the (engagement) ring in my pocket during dinner. I wanted to wait for a private moment and it happened in her home.”

Toni was already in her sleepwear and was clueless that a life-changing event was about to happen.

“Naka dress down ako. Ang pangit ng histura ko. Nakadapa kami ni Alex (Gonzaga, her younger sister) at wala kaming idea.”

Alex was even teasing Toni because Paul has not proposed yet.

‘I wanna join you guys’

“Buti nga. Dapat lang di siya mag propose kasi masyado siyang predictable kung sa birthday mo siya magpo-propose,” Alex told Toni.

But the sisters saw Paul going up to the family living room on the second floor with their parents, Mommy Pinty and Daddy Bonoy. That was when Alex already knew what was about to happen.

Toni relates that her sister had a meltdown. Alex ran and Paul and her dad had to call her back.

That was when Paul was finally able to say his piece.

“I told her family I won’t take her (Toni) away from them. I told them ‘I wanna join you guys.’

Immediate ‘yes’

Midway through the director's  speech, Toni’s dad hugged his eldest daughter and Paul was so touched, he broke down into tears and went down on his knees to pop the question.

It didn’t help that he was doing “something I haven’t done in my life.”

But he did not have to fear because Toni “said yes halfway through the question.”

“Seven years din naghintay si Paul,” Toni explained. And in those seven years, Toni said Paul knew he was only her fourth priority, after God, her family, and work. But he accepted it without complaints.

True love waits

“He stayed. He proved to me that true love waits. So if he wants me to become his wife, hindi na siya 3rd priority. I will make sure he will be my only priority. Everything else is secondary.”

Paul will not keep Toni from continuing her career after marriage because he knows being an actress has always been her dream.

Toni, for her part, promised fans she will do a rom-com with Coco Martin as her last project for them before she gets married.

The happy bride-to-be thanked her parents for giving her the right values that made her the person she is today.
