Gambles that paid off for Tom Rodriguez
By Gerry Plaza
If one word describes Tom Rodriguez, it is simply this: HOT!
Who would believe that this theatre singer/actor and Pinoy Big Brother alum would create such big waves and create a stir in the entertainment world, particularly on primetime TV.
While he did make an impact in such ABS-CBN shows like Angelito: Batang Ama and Be Careful With My Heart, Tom became a revelation as an actor when landed the role of Vincent in the controversial and successful gay-themed drama My Husband’s Lover on GMA-7.
Since then, eyes were glued to the actor, who is now a leading fixture in Kapuso programs, such as the current My Destiny and the game show Don’t Lose The Money, which he hosts.
Attribute this hotness to the versatility he presents with his acting, singing and hosting to the way he exudes a menacing aura that keeps audiences captivated.
With the success of My Husband’s Lover, which even garnered an International Emmy nomination this year, it shows that Tom’s frequent gambles in life have paid off—from the time he set foot in the country from his roots in the US to the decision of not only switching networks but also portraying a risky role that could make or break his chances.
How the public surprisingly embraced his portrayal of Vincent shows how not only the changing mindset of audiences but how they appreciate true acting at its core. Indeed, Tom’s route to stardom is not as conventional as what matinee idols have become in the past decades through safe, “wholesome” vehicles such as star-studded ensembles and love teams.
Tom dared to bring something new and that’s why he’s appreciated and admired. And the fact that he took incredible risks to where he is today is something that sets him apart from the current potpourri of leading men.
Just like the big gambler who wins it all, Tom is enjoying his dream and will surely not let it slip away.
