"The Moon Embracing the Sun" has become one of this year's most successful Korean dramas. Now airing on GMA Network, the historical romance tells the fictional love story of Lee Hwon, Crown Prince (and eventually King) of the Joseon era, and Yeon Woo, Crown Princess (and eventually Royal Shaman).
Thanks to the unique take on a royal love story, K-drama fans were hooked and turned the series into a huge national hit when it aired in Korea early this year.
I have seen this drama and I have no reservations in recommending it. Let me offer you the "spoiler free" review below:
"The Moon Embracing the Sun" is not a typical "sageuk" or historical drama. The story is really more of a romance than a traditional "sageuk," which often focuses on politics and history.
The story follows the love story between the King and the rightful Queen of the Joseon era, with elements of the dark arts thrown in because the lead character becomes a shaman at one point. Aside from romantic love, familial bonds and the price to pay for personal obsessions are other themes explored in the series. They all make for hours of worthwhile watching.
The performances in "The Moon Embracing the Sun" proved star making for leads Kim Soo Hyun ("Dream High") and Han Ga In ("Bad Guy"). Kim Soo Hyun portrayed his role as the King of Joseon so effectively, fans began addressing him as "Joen-na" or "King." Han Ga In also impressed viewers with her subtle and graceful approach to the character of the Crown Princess Yeon Woo who later became the shaman Wol.
Other cast members were also scene-stealers including the unforgettable Jung Il Woo as Prince Yang Myung, the charming Lee Min Ho as the young Yang Myung, the enduring Kim Min Seo as Bo Kyung, and the warrior-like Song Jae Rim who played the King's bodyguard.
As expected of Korean dramas, the writing is beautiful and the production value superb. You will never regret a single moment watching this drama. "The Moon That Embraces The Sun" is part of the GMA-7 Telebabad weeknights line-up.
