Ara and Cristine: A lesson in humility and forgiveness

Everyone, it seemed, rejoiced last Easter when it was learned that sisters Ara Mina and Cristine Reyes reconciled after a year exchanging bitter words on traditional and social media.

It was fitting that Cristine took the first step, given that she had all guns a-blazing when the controversy erupted a year ago.

In media interviews, Ara revealed how Cristine texted her on Maundy Thursday, March 28, asking if they could talk. After Ara said yes the following day, Cristine took the occasion of Good Friday to finally bury the bloody hatchet. She rushed to Ara’s home in Quezon City and met her estranged sister, who was in tears when Cristine arrived.

Genuine

Ara was quoted as saying that she described Cristine’s effort as genuine and revealed it was her younger sister who first apologized for her actions. It will be recalled that Cristine lashed out at her sister for the alleged non-payment of a loan that formed part of the purchase of an P11 million house for their mother.

Cristine’s tweets and text messages at that time were so nasty and cruel, they forced Ara to file a libel case to “teach her (sister) a lesson.”

But all is water under the bridge, Ara claimed, saying she had forgiven her sister over those remarks.

Case to be withdrawn

To prove this, Ara declared that she is talking to her lawyers about withdrawing the case before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.

We welcome Cristine’s gesture and Ara’s forgiveness. This shows how celebrities, used to having their way, can become bigger than themselves to exhibit this kind of maturity and humility despite past transgressions.

Cristine showed it after verbally attacking Sarah Geronimo on Twitter over her ties with former boyfriend Rayver Cruz. Cristine also reconciled with Sarah backstage in the Sunday variety show “ASAP,” although it was the Pop Princess who first approached the actress.

A word of caution

But of course, nothing beats tact when dealing with personal grudges or conflicts with fellow celebrities. I believe Twitter, Facebook, or any social media should not become the channel to unleash disturbing personal attacks against one another.

The best way to address any issue is the simplest, maybe a simple call or a private conversation within their own domain—and not have the public consume such disturbing exchanges.

And, all parties would not have gone this path, and suffer all the troubles that went with it.
