Classical singer to record a song from space

Will Sarah Brightman’s three-octave range weave its magic in space?

In two years, the classical singer will find out.

Brightman is one of three persons set to travel to the International Space Station Soyuz
in 2015 and stay there for eight days—orbiting the earth 16 times a day.

She also plans to become the first musician "to record a song from space."

Space fan

Representing UNESCO as the U.N. agency’s Artist for Peace ambassador, Brightman couldn’t be more thrilled. She has been a fan of space travel ever since she watched Neil Armstrong land on the moon in 1969.

"Watching the first man land on the moon was an epiphany,” she told this writer during a phone interview. “It changed things and it actually helped me understand what it was that I had to do in my life to further myself, do things and think outside of the box. From that moment, I started to work really hard.”

Now that her dream is about to come true, Brightman has released her eleventh album as a prelude to her big adventure.

Working with the best

“The constant idea of going to space and the emotions that go with it helped me work with the album. This was made because of that dream," she said of her studio work aptly called "Dreamchaser."

In the album rleased under MCA Music, Brightman collaborates for the first time with producer Mike Hedges who has helped craft the records of U2, The Cure and Dido. The first two singles are entitled "Angel" and "One Day Like This." Appropriately, too, she covers the Paul McCartney’s “Venus and Mars.”

Her latest music video has universal harmony as its theme. "It's about the smallest, simplest experience of single love, being together. It is a festival of love and colors," she explained.

‘PH a beautiful place’

Brightman, who has sold 30 million records, has been to the Philippines a number of times.

"Philippines is a beautiful place and being there was a lovely experience. I enjoyed the food and the company of the people," she said.

When Brightman returns from her eight-day space adventure, she will go on a Space to Place concert tour in which she is set to perform at UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
