GMA-7: 'Bubble Gang' not bursting

Contrary to earlier reports, GMA 7's sketch comedy show “Bubble Gang” will not be canceled.

In a statement sent to Yahoo! Southeast Asia, GMA 7 Senior Vice President for Entertainment Wilma Galvante clarified that the gag show will not be signing off the air.

According to the statement, “The Kapuso Network finds no reason to end 'Bubble Gang', one of its flagship programs, as it goes stronger and continues to deliver its unmatched brand of comedy to its loyal viewers every week as it did for the last 15 years. In fact, it has been airing at an earlier time slot to cater to even more viewers since November 2010.”

Speculation on “Bubble Gang's” cancellation began when Philippine Star entertainment editor Ricky Lo wrote in his “Funfare” column last January 17: “I am sad. One of my favorite shows (which I never fail to watch, come what may) will soon fade out after one decade and a half on the air.”

Yahoo! Southeast Asia TV blogger Ed Sicam, meanwhile, speculated that Lo was referring to GMA 7's “Bubble Gang.” “It was quite obvious which show he was referring to. ‘BG’ has been entertaining viewers for "a decade and a half" (It premiered on Oct. 20, 1995.). The give-away line was of course his reference to the show finally bursting like a bubble. Ricky has very reliable sources in the industry so I have no doubt that the report is true,” he wrote.

Sicam, however, hoped that “Bubble Gang” will remain on air.

“Here is Mark Antony’s line in William Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” after the emperor is assassinated: ‘Here was a Caesar. When comes such another?” In the same vein, I say, ‘Here was ‘Bubble Gang.’ When comes such another?’ However, I’m hoping in the end that I will be quoting Mark Twain who said, “The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”
