Private moments captured: hiphop and rock stars bond with kids, family

It was a typical Sunday afternoon family barbecue with kids running around and friends catching up.

It was normal as normal could be except for one thing: the family consisted of members of the hardest rocking bands in the country laughing with their significant others, taking photographs of their kids and swapping stories about how they grow up so fast.

You wouldn’t have guessed that these guys are capable of whipping up a sweatstorm of jampacked, writhing bodies in venues big and small. Everyone today seems so tame and happy with such simple joys as being with family.

Biyaya ng supling

The gathering also marked another thing: the video shoot of Greyhoundz and Loonie’s new song “Ang Bagong Ako” featuring Biboy Garcia of Queso, directed by Enzo Marcos.

Friends from contemporaries like Queso and Slapshock were there at the party including those from Stickfiggas and the rest of the hiphop community. Gabby Alipe of Urbandub dropped by the video shoot as well.

"Ang Bagong Ako" starts with the lyrics, “Minsan gusto ko nang iwanan ang larong ito ngunit di nala ako pinapayagan/Buti na lang biniyayaan ng isang munting supling kaya muling ginanahan.” The words ring true for both Loonie and Reg Rubio of Greyhoundz as they had their first-borns almost at the same time.

A new version of themselves

The song speaks of the bravery of the new version of themselves as they face life head on with the blessing that’s been given to them.

I’ve been told how some people’s lives completely turn around when children come into the picture. Far from turning soft, these musicians say having children has made their choices clearer: “Ang bagong ako, ngayon ang panahon/Aking aangkinin ang bawa’t pagkakataon”.

It’s rare to have musicians—especially in the genres these guys are in—write music that promotes family values. But here they are offstage, living by example and inspiring people to value the bond of family, whether as a child, a sibling or a parent.
