Yes, Daniel Padilla is a star

In 2011, we predicted that this young actor would be the next big thing in show business.

He didn't disappoint.

In just a short time, Daniel Padilla has had a major impact in the industry and become that rare teen heartthrob whose charm cuts across all sections of society, from high-brow college girls to tweens to occasional career girls.

Blame it on the Padilla charm, but also on Daniel making strides largely on his own.

Turn of events

It seemed…karmic? lucky? fated?...that Albie Casino, who was embroiled in controversy over the pregnancy of Andi Eigenmann, had been dropped from the original cast of the 2011 youth-oriented drama "Growing Up." And when Daniel stepped in to replace Albie, the rest is history.

He did not put this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to waste, captivating with natural charm and exuding a potential comparable to the country's great actors when they were young.

Today, however, his growing popularity remains attached to the formulaic love tandem mentality of show business. Often paired with fellow young star Kathryn Bernardo, the duo could become one of the most successful team-ups in showbiz after the Kim Chiu-Gerald Anderson tandem.

Daniel's first primetime show, "Princess and I," opposite Kathryn, is currently one of the top-rated shows in the ABS-CBN Primetime Bida block, with a share of 40% of the audience s behind the topnotcher "Walang Hanggan," in the Kantar-TNS ratings.

Now with Kris and Anne

The Kapamilya network has since recognized his popularity and skills as an actor, casting him and partner Kathryn to be among the leads in a big network drama planned for release next month, "Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw." Daniel plays the young version of a character to be portrayed by his uncle, Robin Padilla. The show top bills Kris Aquino, Padilla, and Anne Curtis.

There can only be brighter things ahead for Daniel. Indeed, he has what it takes to become the top leading man in show business. But, realizing his potential is still his call.

Nevertheless, the way he handles his career right now may be a good sign.
