Pinoy Pop-O-Rama: From Eraserhead to paperback writer

Last year, former Eraserheads guitarist and frontman for Marcus Highway Marcus Adoro made available on SoundCloud a collection of 100 “songs” known as the “Greems” compilation.

It was the initial release behind a book and music project conceived, produced and distributed by Adoro in cooperation with influence, which at that time, he intimated may include events “already happening in another dimension.”

Now the book, also entitled “Greems,” has been released.

Measuring a handy 4-inches by 6-inches, the 200-odd-page paperback resembles those daily devotional books in size and feel.

Adoro dedicates it to “A, Z, S and K and to M for always being there.” He also lists his mom and dad, adding “he would have been proud.”

The rhythm of rock & roll

In look and in tone, the first 99 “poems” (the 100th piece being a mere title “Complete”) that constitute the paperback have the rhythm and tone of rock and roll.

"What started out innocently as a joyful mockery of my 7-year old daughter’s guitar skills turned into a daily ordeal of writing, performing, and uploading on the internet of almost 100 musical pieces,” Adoro says on his website.

There are lots of repetitions, sudden shifts in focus, and an 8-line build-up from a single word to a 9-word statement.

From John Lennon to Facebook

Naturally, there are references to rock icons (e.g. John Lennon, Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips, Frank Zappa even cartoonist and filmmaker Roxlee!), genres (reggae, rhythm & blues) and new technology from texting to Facebook and computer commands.

Each “poem” is accompanied by illustrations on the facing page, including the final no-text page “Complete.”

The simple, graphic-y drawings (by hotshot creative Apol Sta. Maria, who also designed the book) seem to tell something more “complete” than the “poems” which appear to hurtle to the end of page so the process of creating the next quick idea can begin again.

“Greems” is available at Team Manila stores in Trinoma, Rockwell and Mall of Asia.
