Cee Lo saves Cheesa from elimination on ‘The Voice’

For a moment, it looked as though Fil-Am singer Cheesa Laureta would be out of "The Voice" after the live performances Monday night (Tuesday morning Philippine time). She was not among the top three singers on Team Cee Lo who got the most votes from the viewers. Her interpretation of the disco number "Don't Leave me This Way" did not impress the viewing audience. This despite the rave review from her coach, Cee Lo Green who said, "I thought she did a great job. I think it was a successful match of you and your voice. It was electrifying. I enjoyed it. I think the people did as well." The other coaches Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton were not as enthusiastic but they all agreed that she did a great job.

I watched her number Wednesday evening on AXN and although she wasn't spectacular, she certainly held her own against her teammates. I feel that what's preventing some viewers from voting for her is the "glamour" factor. Cheesa doesn't have the look that will attract the voting public. She's on the chubby side and that may turn off some members of the TV audience. Look what happened to Jennifer Hudson who landed in seventh place on the third season of "American Idol." However, she had the last laugh because she went on to win an Oscar for "Dream Girls" and is now enjoying a successful show biz career in the movies and the recording industry.

Making it to the next round from Team Cee Lo were Juliet Simms, Jamar Rogers and James Masonne. Chessa, Erin Martin and Tony Vincent had to sing and impress their coach Cee Lo to get the last spot. Chessa sang "All By Myself," Erin did "Your Song" and Tony Vincent dished out "Sweet Dreams Are Made of These." Cheesa got the votes of Adam, Blake and Christina. As always, it was Cee Lo's choice that mattered and in the end he decided to keep Cheesa. ("My head says Tony but my heart says Cheesa.")

I caught Cheesa's all-or-nothing performance on You Tube and she did much, much better than her disco number. She probably did everything in her power to give the greatest performance of her life to stay on the show. Her efforts paid off.

The live performance was only aired locally Wednesday evening on AXN while the results show will still be aired Thursday evening. Thanks to the Internet, we already knew the results Wednesday morning. Much like "American Idol" where the results show is aired Friday evening but the results are known in the morning through the Net.

This robs the two shows of the suspense factor for local viewers who are following the journeys of FilAm singers Jessica Sanchez and Cheesa. In the case of Jessica, the suspense factor will not kick in until two or three finalists are left. The San Diego native is expected to hurdle the next four weeks on "AI." This is not the case with Cheesa who barely made it in this week's elimination round. I guess local viewers who want to be surprised about the results can always stay away from the Net and wait for the telecast.

Cheesa now joins 15 other contestants who have made it to the next round. Here's hoping, the viewers recognize her talent and save her for the round of eight.
