Mad about Sakae Candle

Restaurant: Sakae Sushi, Singapore

http://www.sakaesushi.com.sg/

Hi guys! Greetings from Singapore! I'm starting a new food blog series since I can't always blog with my "Digestive Sister" Nicole, who is graduating very soon (Yahoo! Congrats Nicole!). But watch out for our new webisodes as she is on vacation at the moment. I'm hoping to see her here for our first international food blog =)

I'd like to introduce you to the "Mad about food" series named after my character Maddie from the TV series "The Kitchen Musical." Please watch out for it in Manila on Studio 23. It will also be aired on AXN Asia.

Love,

K

P.S. Just want to say thank you for supporting my album "Roadtrip." I hope that you can continue to vote for the OMG music video (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9Y_KyRCHfY ) on Myx. I'm so happy because it's still on the MYX charts.

MYX REQUEST OMG

After my New York trip where I celebrated the Philippine Independence Day with the gorgeous Pinoys there, (link: http://ph.omg.yahoo.com/blogs/writeaway/bringing-joy-filipinos-abroad-independence-day-020305024.html) I had a short lay-over in Japan on my way back to Singapore.

I was able to walk around the airport for a bit...

I had a break and a wasabi KitKat. It tasted great. It wasn't as spicy as I'd expected since the wasabi flavor blends in perfectly well with the chocolate. It was just a bit weird to see a light green colored KitKat.

I didn't really have a chance to eat a proper Japanese meal though which is why I looked for some good Japanese food when I got back to Singapore.

I was out with some of the cast members of the Kitchen Musical namely Christian Bautista, Ikey Canoy and Rosemary Vandenbroucke when we saw a familiar green frog icon on the wall- Sakae Sushi. I've been to the Bonifacio Global City (BGC) branch a long time ago but I didn't realize that it was a franchise of an Asian regional brand.

"Fast food" comes in different shapes and sizes- we have the "go large" variety, the street food style and the healthier alternatives. Sakae Sushi is a Japanese restaurant that has sushi and sashimi prepared in color coded plates placed in a revolving conveyer belt that is a mini version of the ones at the airport. Its predecessor, the lazy susan (the round contraption placed on top of a round table usually found in Filipino homes and some Chinese restaurants. Dishes made for "family sharing" are placed on top of it while it is manually moved. It makes eating convenient since it eliminates passing dishes by hand) must be proud of the success of these kinds of restaurants.

Sakae Sushi isn't a traditional fast food joint because it also serves regular dishes that take a while to order plus it doesn't serve processed foods. Jamie Oliver and the advocates of the food revolution would be very pleased. ( link: http://www.ted.com/talks/jamie_oliver.html ) You can choose to order food on the computer where the menu items are on display waiting for you to click on them with the Sakae Sushi frog mascot computer mouse (that's a bit confusing because there were two animals mentioned just now).

I was looking to try something other than the Pinoy all-time favorite california maki, salmon sashimi or tuna sashimi. I have actually moved on to Philadelphia cream cheese roll and creative sushi dishes with crunchy salmon skin or tempura flakes but I was looking for something newer and more exciting.

The new Sakae Candle SGD 6.99

According to the menu it is made up of avocado, Japanese cucumber, crabmeat, shrimp roe, codfish roe and mayonnaise. It is actually a pair of 2 pieces of sushi stacked together with what I think is salmon on top. The candle wick is edible and gives the salmon an interesting flavor.

Fire on a dish- be it a flambé or hot soup in a heated palayok is always exciting to a certain degree. I kinda wish the waitress shouted "opa!" when she lit up the Sakae candle in the tradition of the flaming cheese in the Cyma Greek restaurants for a little more dramatic flair!

It is not advisable to replace a birthday cake with this dish because the fire will burn out before the song is finished.

We tried to light it up a second time for a picture...

but we failed.

If you want to try this out in the Philippines, there's a Sake Sushi branch at the Fort and in the Mall of Asia. I hope their menu is updated. Please check the link for the complete address. http://www.sakaesushi.com.sg/intphil.html They also have branches in China, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. http://www.sakaesushi.com.sg/int.html

'Til our next food blog!

Love,

K

P.S. Here's a little something I saw in Japan. A bracelet by Lady Gaga for the victims of the recent earthquakes and the tsunami. It's a nice reminder of how the world is praying for our Japanese brothers and sisters.
