#OnHIGHerGround the Concert

Gary Valenciano serenades his fans at the Music Museum during his concert. (NPPA Images)Every time Tito Gary has a concert, I always feel a #HEIGHtened excitement and make an event of it. This year, since I have been trying my best to support the OPM concert scene, I have vowed to watch one OPM concert for every foreign act that I watch. To my mind, it balances things out in the music world somehow. Going back to the concert, since our families have #HIstory, I made sure my mom @zsazsapadilla, sister @ziaquizon and I were in complete attendance for Tito Gary's concert. We don't simply call each other "family friends" but we do call each other "POF" or "Part-of-Family" since Mama and Tito Gary have been singing partners since the 80s. It was rather amusing that Tito Gary would suddenly talk to my mom during the concert about random things as if they were onstage together. They have been performing in concerts and are finally starring in a movie together together where in they pay tribute to the music of the APO Hiking Society. This is where we play connect the dots. The Gary V. hit "Di na natuto" was actually composed by APO member Danny Javier. These are rather unlikely musical exchanges because APO is an Atenean group, arch nemesis of the well known green-blooded Valencianos.

Incidentally, Gary V. started making a name for himself during his #HIGHschool days in La Salle Greenhills as a part of Kundirana. The teenage heartthrob charm lives on as Mr. Pure Energy walks to the Music Museum audience which causes the ladies to go gaga! To make the air greener, fellow Kundirana alumni Juan Miguel Salvador and long-time musical director Mon Faustino both of whom are two batches ahead of Gary V share the stage with him. Juan Miguel's entrance from digital figure to "real life rockstar in the flesh" sends screams coming his way.  It's one of the many #HI-Tech moments worth raving about in the concert. You have to see this for yourself.

In contrast, no frills, pure genius #HAIku-like spoken word at its best was introduced to many by singer/rapper @officialQUEST. He found the perfect way to describe Gary V. with words smoothly flowing from his mouth in a moment of inspired genius.

Poetry in motion reigned next with what  Mr. Pure Energy does best. Though I've seen Tito Gary joke about not being able to match up to his son @gabvalenciano's mad dancing skills, it cannot be denied that he effortlessly lights up the stage with his moves. And these are best remembered when he dances with the equally talented Manouevres from his "Hataw Na," "Sa Yahweh" and "Shout for Joy" days.

It's nice to see a successful concert artist with familiar combinations, people who have shared his success with him through the years. But, it was also a welcome addition to his repertoire to see a new perfect combination.  I was very excited to watch one of my favorite singers, @juliannetarroja who sang "Grateful" a long-time favorite of mine. She didn't disappoint, one of the #HIGHpoints of the concert was Julianne's string of inspirational duets with Gary V. (Check out her music thisisjulianne.com) Julianne's sincerity combined with her beautiful voice and guitar skills earned her the audience members' hearts. Of course, their medley with the tearjerker "Warrior is a Child" made me cry like any Gary V. concert but even more so because the concert is in Music Museum. This place is otherwise known as #baHAYniGaryV, obviously because it's seen him grow up as a singer. The intimate concert is not laid back but it feels comfortable in a "shoes-off" kind of way.  Pure "senti" energy translates to a #HYper-active energy and back which is drawn by the crowd to take home with them. You can be sure that you will cry or feel emotional at one point and that you'll be dancing in a minute. It's a crazy roller coaster of emotions, a #HIGHtide of hataw and tears combined.

After his monumental 25th anniversary concerts in Araneta, Gary V has somehow found a way to elevate himself even higher. The amazing talent, the wonderful music, the great production are all commendable but for me, what struck me most was this... I was with a married couple who watched Gary V. live in concert for the first time and they were #ONaHIGH as they took photos with him backstage. My friend told me that they felt like they were single again and out on a date. His music rekindled the flame to make it burn even brighter. Now, that's A compliment!

Backstage, credit was given where credit is due. Ms. @zsazsapadilla kept exclaiming "Ang galing ng inaanak ko!" She was raving about her godson or inaanak Mr. @PaoloValenciano who co-directed the concert with his dad. Say #HI to the new kid on the director's block.
