#BestSongEver: ‘Don't Go Away’ by Oasis

Editor’s Note: #BestSongEver stories are published every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

This is the only song I've invested more time on in my life than on any other songs I like. Why? Well because “Be Here Now,” the band’s third album, was the first CD I ever bought.

It was 1997. It was around this time that the album was released. I don't recall why I chose the CD all those years ago, but I remember it was my birthday and I had money and wanted to buy CDs. (There was Madonna, too, and Backstreet Boys, Peter Andre—ehem, I was still trying to discover what music I really liked).

CDs then were P375 a piece, far more expensive than the ones sold today. It was a really steep price for a 14 year old.

Only permanent thing in my life

"Don't Go Away" was that one song in that album that stood out for me.

Through the years, it helped me get through everything I've ever tried to do. I mean everything—high school, college, career changes.

Year after year the song would always creep to my playlist. It was there for me, the most permanent thing in my life—ironic, really, since the song is about wanting not to be left behind.

Paved my career path

Maybe it was just luck that I picked it up, or I may have been hooked by Oasis's videos on MTV, or was probably seduced by the surreal album cover design. Whatever the reason, that decision to go for the Oasis CD led me to like Britpop, which, in turn, paved my career path: from styling bands, to photographing them, to actually taking photos of the Gallagher brothers at Fuji Rock festival 2 years ago.

At that time, the estranged brothers were in separate bands: Liam Gallagher with Beady Eye and Noel Gallagher with the High Flying Birds. Neither played my #BestSongEver, making me wish that they would  get back together just so I could listen to them play the song live. I guess it gave the song more meaning if both brothers were doing the tune.

Not alone in feeling like a mess

You know how they say music is your lifelong companion and best friend? Well, whenever I listen to this song, I feel like it's okay to make mistakes because you're not alone in feeling like a mess.

We all know that the Gallagher brothers are a mess (their fights were legendary) and if they happen to be these geniuses that make hit songs, then we're all really okay!

I always scream out part of the chorus that goes, "Yes, I need more time just to make things right."

Chances

Don't we all just wish everyone would give us all the chances in the world for just trying, like there's some beauty in all the “almost” of our lives.

The song may be about someone who's about to leave, but Oasis made a compelling statement that you know they'll definitely never leave.

Definitely. Maybe. Well that's another album.
