#BestSongEver: 'No Ordinary Morning' by Chicane

By Paolo Buenaventura

“Is there no light in your heart for me? You’ve closed your eyes, you no longer see...”

In the middle of 2011 I was going through a very tough break up. A break up that would leave me not only devastated, physically and emotionally, but lead me to an unfamiliar career path.

And not to mention getting a break-up tattoo.

The Break-up Playlist

This is when I heard “No Ordinary Morning” by Chicane.

The melodramatic trance beat is what made me notice it among the countless songs I was listening to on YouTube at that time (my so-called Break-up Playlist).

But what really made me stop and listen to it were the lyrics. It was haunting, brutal, sincere and, most importantly, it was what I was experiencing.

Tough on the outside...
Tough on the outside...

Tailor made

It is a song about a sudden end from a very easy and comfortable love life.

At the time, it felt like a song tailor made for me.

How I was left alone all of a sudden and was looking for a reason. Moving too fast then stopping abruptly. Struggling to fight for a doomed relationship but being left alone in the end watching someone turn their back and walk away.

Moving on

The funny thing was, it also triggered me to move on.

After a while, the song became a comfort, reminding me that somehow, someone else has experienced what was I was going through, made it out alive and then wrote a song about it.

Slowly but surely I picked up bits and pieces of my heart and moved on.

Different phones and MP3 players later, “No Ordinary Morning” is still part of my regular playlist and I still find comfort whenever I listen to it.
