3 qualities you need to have to be Mister World Philippines

Do you have what it takes to succeed Andrew Wolff?

Who will succeed Andrew Wolff as Mister World Philippines?

The Philippines is not taking its new title “pageant powerhouse” lightly, what with the numerous crowns Filipino beauty queens brought home in 2013. This 2014, pageant organizers have also set their sights on male competitions. Leading the pack are Cory Quirino, president of CQ Global Quest Inc (official licensee of Miss World Philippines and Mister World Philippines), and Arnold Vegafria, president of ALV Events International, a talent and event management group.

Vegafria is also the chair of Mister World Philippines 2014.

In partnership with Ayala Malls, the first Mister World Philippines competition was launched earlier this April at Glorietta 5.

“That was our dream and our promise to the Filipino people, that after Miss World Philippines, we are going to focus on Mister World Philippines,” Cory Quirino told Yahoo Philippines. “If we won first runner-up in 2011 in the Miss World pageant in London, and then we won the crown two years later, I feel it’s a good sign after Andrew Wolff won first runner-up in England [in 2012], that we can go for the title of Mister World.”

“This is the most prestigious [male] competition because it’s not like the other male competitions that only require the candidates to show off their body and looks. This one is different,” added Vegafria.

What qualities are they looking for in Andrew Wolff’s successor?

1. He has to be naturally athletic
“We don’t really need to train our Mister World except for — if we can finalize our tie-up with the Philippine Army — we’d like for the winner to undergo combat training, at least the basics of combat training,” said Cory. “Because Mister World has pre-pageant activities which are graded, combat training supervised by the UK army.”

She quickly added, “This is not to scare the future candidates of Mister World Philippines. This is just to advise them that they have to be prepared to undergo training for this.”

2. He has to have a pleasing personality
“That’s hard to find here in our country because others don’t wanna join. They think it’s corny,” said Vegafria. “There is a wrong perception because of the other male pageants. Mister World is a very high-caliber, high-class type of pageant."

3. He has to be smart and good-looking
Mister World is a competition after all, and the Philippine candidate will compete with over 70 men from around the world. He has to have what it takes to stand out. “As the Mr. World organizers say, it’s all about ‘beauty with a purpose’,” said Wolff.

28-year-old Wolff was given the title in 2012 after a private screening and as a result of a unanimous decision of people involved, according to Vegafria. He went to Kent, England only two days after he was told he had the title, and finished 1st Runner-Up to Colombia’s Francisco Escobar.

Cory debunks perception that their standards are “too high.” As of the launch, 50 hopefuls had already submitted their application via the Miss World Philippines website.

The names of the 15 to 20 official candidates will be released soon. The screening and finals will be held in Ayala Malls in May (exact dates have yet to be announced). The Mister World 2014 competition will be held on June 15 in Torbay, London.

“That means our candidate has to be in London by the end of May,” said Cory. “Our winner will have only about two to three weeks’ training, just like Megan Young (Miss World 2013) and Gwen Ruais (Miss World 2011 1st Princess). We have to get them already ready for the competition.”

Involvement in a pageant-competition is a first for Ayala Malls. “We’ve always recognized Filipinos and Filipinas who have given honor and pride to our country,” said Rowena Tomeldan, head of Commercial Business Planning and Strategic Development, Ayala Land. “When Megan Young won Miss World, all of a sudden there’s been such a great interest in international beauty pageants, so now we’d like to take part.”
