ABS-CBN wins big at the 25th Star Awards for TV

ABS-CBN emerged as the biggest winner in the 25th Star Awards for Television of the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) held Tuesday night, November 22, at the Newport Performing Arts Theater of Resorts World Manila in Pasay City.

The Kapamilya network won more than 20 awards, including Best TV Station.

GMA 7, meanwhile, bagged 16 awards, while TV5 went home with six. Three awards went to Studio 23, Net 25 got two, and UNTV-37 won one award.

Coco Martin bagged the Best Drama Actor award for his dual role in ABS-CBN’s TV drama “Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin.” This is Coco’s second Best Drama Actor award. The first was in 2009 for his performance in “Tayong Dalawa.”

“Maraming salamat po sa pangalawang pagkakataon na ibinigay nyo sa akin ang trophy na ito, sa pagtitiwala nyo sa akin. Gusto ko pong magpasalamat sa ABS-CBN dahil sa pagbubukas ng pinto para ipakita ko ang talent sa larangan ng telebisyon,” Coco said in his acceptance speech.

Gretchen Barretto won Best Drama Actress for ABS-CBN's teleserye “Magkaribal.” Other acting awards went to Ai-Ai delas Alas for Best Single Performance by an Actress for the “Maala-ala Mo Kaya” episode ‘Krus’ and Best Comedy Actress for the defunct sitcom, “M3” (Malay Mo, Ma-develop), while Enchong Dee won Best Single Best Single Performance By An Actor for the “MMK” epsiode “Parol.”

ABS-CBN’s “Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin,” starring Coco Martin, Maja Salvador, Lorna Tolentino, John Estrada and Andi Eigenmann, won the Best Primetime Drama Series.

Big winner

Another big winner in this year’s Star Awards is Luis Manzano who won Best Male Showbiz-Oriented Show Host for “E-Live,” and Best Talent Search Program Host, which he shared with co-host Billy Crawford for “Pilipinas Got Talent.” Their defunct game show “Panahon Ko ‘To!: Ang Game Show Ng Buhay Ko” won Best Game Show.

Boy Abunda was honored as Hall of Famer in the Best Male Showbiz-Oriented Show Host category. Boy was overwhelmed upon accepting the recognition from his idol, Nora Aunor who introduced him on stage and presented the award. Boy also won Best Public Affairs Program Host for ABS-CBN’s “Bottomline,” which bagged the Best Public Affairs Program award.

Toni Gonzaga won Best Female TV Host for “ASAP Rocks,” while first-time winner Allan K won Best Male TV Host for “Eat Bulaga.”

Anthony Taberna of Studio 23's “Iba-Balita Ni Anthony Taberna” won Best Male Newscaster, while Vicky Morales of GMA 7’s “Saksi” won Best Female Newscaster. Studio 23’s “US Girls,” hosted by Angel Aquino, Iya Villania and Cheska Kramer, won Best Lifestyle Show and Best Lifestyle Show Hosts.

TV5’s awards were for Best Public Service Program Host (lawyer Presida Acosta for “Public Atorni”), Best Talent Search Program (“Talentadong Pinoy”), Best Game Show Host (Vic Sotto for “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire”), Best Female Showbiz-Oriented Show Host (Cristy Fermin for “Paparazzi”), Best Drama Anthology (“Untold Stories Mula Sa Face To Face”) and Best Variety Show (“Willing Willie”).

Net 25 won in the Best Celebrity Talk Show and Host categories. Gladys Reyes’ “Moments” won Best Celebrity Talk Show, while Janice de Belen of “Spoon” won as Best Celebrity Talk Show Host.

UNTV 37’s “Bitag” hosted by Ben Tulfo, which now airs on TV5, won Best Public Service Program. GMA 7’s “I-Witness” won Best TV Documentary Program, with its hosts Kara David, Jay Taruc, Howie Severino, and Sandra Aguinaldo bagging the awards for Best TV Documentary Program Hosts.

The Best New Male TV Personality award was a tie between GMA 7 actors Derrick Monasterio and Teejay Marquez of Reel Love Presents Tween Hearts.

Jillian Ward was named Best New Female TV Personality.

Special awards

Nora, now a TV5 talent, received a special award for her musical variety show ‘Superstar,’ which aired on RPN 9 for 22 years. Fans loudly cheered for her as she received the award with good friend German `Kuya Germs’ Moreno.  Nora, who was dressed in a purple gown, thanked Kuya Germs, the staff and her fans.

Kuya Germs got the  Star Builder Award for his major contribution in the entertainment industry, especially in discovering and developing stars through his variety shows “That’s Entertainment,” “GMA Supershow” and “Walang Tulugan with the Master Showman.” Zsa Zsa Padilla, Dawn Zulueta, Billy Crawford and Lani Mercado are among the stars Kuya Germs developed.

“Maala-ala Mo Kaya (MMK)” received the Hall of Fame award for Drama Anthology. It already won 15 awards in this category. ABS-CBN president and “MMK” host Charo Santos-Concio received the award together with her staff and writers.

Susan Roces received the Ading Fernando Lifetime Achievement Award from presenters Helen Gamboa and Eddie Gutierrez.

Broadcast journalist Jessica Soho received the Excellence in Broadcasting Award for her major contributions in the field as a reporter and mentor. Director-choreographer Lito Calzado was also given a tribute and special award which was accepted by his daughter Iza Calzado.

Lea Salonga and El Gamma Penumbra opened the show. KC Concepcion, Toni Gonzaga, Erik Santos and Pauleen Luna also performed.

Hosts were Richard Gomez, Dawn Zulueta, Piolo Pascual and Shamcey Supsup.

The awards rites will have a delayed telecast on November 27, 10:30 p.m., on ABS-CBN's Kapamilya Sunday's Best.
