Alice lives life the way she wants it

Alice Dixson used to feel the pressure when people would bring up the topic of children.  Let’s face it.  Philippine society has yet to look more kindly on couples who have remained childless after years of marriage.

But today, 12 years of wedded bliss and not a single child after, Alice no longer feels she has to live up to expectations of bearing at least one child.

“Children are gifts.  But they’re not the be-all and end-all of marriage,” she said in an interview after a guest appearance on TV 5’s “Paparazzi.”

Alice feels bad for  friends who continue to stay in a doomed marriage for the sake of the children.

“It’s difficult,” she sighs.

Fulfilled

The star of the upcoming TV5 series “Glamorosa” thinks a couple can feel fulfilled even if they remain childless.

“Oprah and her partner don’t have kids.  Pero ang dami nilang natutulungan all over the world. Kanya-kanyang mission and calling yan.”

Besides,  the absence of children has not threatened Alice’s rock-solid marriage at all.  In fact, Alice is so content with her marriage she gushes like a brand-new bride whenever she describes her husband, Ronne Miranda.

“He allows me to grow.  That’s one of the reasons I married him,” Alice explains.

Back when she was still new in Canada and unsure of herself, Alice’s husband would  encourage her to send her resume and go out and find her place in the sun.

“He taught me not to be afraid and feel second rate just because I didn’t grow up in Canada,” Alice recalls.

Since her husband is based in the States and Alice frequents Manila for acting jobs, the couple sometimes agree to meet up in the Philippines whenever Ronnie’s schedule allows.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.  By the time they meet up in the Philippines, Alice – and her husband -- miss each other so much, they’re still on honeymoon mode.

Not a dull relationship

“It’s not a dull relationship,” Alice relates.

Their marriage was no bed of roses at the start.  Alice admits they had nasty fights during their first year of marriage because both of them are independent people.  But this has become a thing of the past since both of them have adjusted to each other.

“I can tell him my crush and he can tell me his,” explains Alice. “I can tell him everything without being judged upon. We’re really good friends.”

After the plan for her to star in Regal Films’  Metro Filmfest entry “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” failed to push through,  Alice will return to Canada and spend the Christmas holidays with her husband and the rest of the family there.

“It’s their (Regal Films) prerogative.  They can find somebody else na mas bagay sa role.  And that happens to be Maricel (Soriano),”Alice goes on.

'Glamorosa'

It’s enough that fans will continue to see her in “Glamorosa,” where she schemes and connives to make Lorna Tolentino’s life miserable.

Besides, Alice doesn’t have to work herself to the bone.  Her businessman-husband can always provide for her.

“We just enjoy what he have,” she points out. “We travel a lot because of our work.  Simple lang kami.  We’re very practical.”

These are hardly the words of the unhappily married woman Alice was rumored to be.  These are the words of someone who can’t ask for more and is living life the way she  -- not others – wants it.
