'Amy' documentary breaks UK box office record

"Amy" became the second-highest grossing documentary at the British box office

Acclaimed film about the ill-fated singer Amy Winehouse "Amy" has broken a UK box office record its opening weekend.

With £519,000 (approximately $807,000) in the bank since Friday, it's made the highest-earning opening weekend for a UK documentary in cinemas and is second only to Michael Moore's 2004 documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11" globally, according to NME.

The film played in 133 cinemas nationally and the number will climb to more than 200 by this coming Friday, July 10.

Across the pond, "Amy" earned $222,000 (£142,000) despite playing in just six cinemas in the US and more are expected to play the film in the weeks to come.
