Angel loves Kurt Cobain and other revelations behind the scenes of Generation’s new music vid

“Yeah, I wish we were in one of the scenes… like I could be lying down like this and eating grapes or something.”

Kowboy Santos, lead guitarist for Generation, momentarily reclines on a couch to illustrate his point.

Outside, a picnic mat, wine, and sandwiches are laid out in the spacious garden and people are scurrying about trying to find the best spot where the sunlight, filtered by trees, will provide the best romantic play of textures.

Second-generation musicians

Santos’s band Generation is shooting the music video for “Make It Right” but their scenes were shot in December; on this second day, bassist Joe Chan and Santos are hanging out and imagining what the final output will look like.

They are a study in contrasts: Santos the long-haired mestizo looking every inch a rock guitarist, while Chan, in a collared shirt and slacks, projects a managerial air, reserved but ready to discuss “Game of Thrones” at length.

They are, in fact, younger reflections of their famous parents: Kowboy is the Son of Sampaguita, while Joe and his keyboardist brother Mike are Jose Mari Chan’s. Rhythm guitarist Ige Gallardo calls Celeste Legaspi mom. Their debut album under Star Records features all original material so don’t expect them to do “Beautiful Girl” or “Mamang Sorbetero” (the latter would be a touch weird).

Second-generation director

The video is directed by Indie-go Media’s Nico Reyes, himself carrying on in his father director Jun Reyes’ footsteps. He has directed many commercials and his energy, enthusiasm, and quick-on-his-toes (or eyes as it were) approach make the shooting light despite the constant need to chase natural light.

Oh, and of course it helps too that the featured actress, herself tireless, is obviously loved by the entire production team: Angel Locsin.

She has worked with both generations of the Reyes directors, and she is comfortable.

Angel: ‘I’m a 90s baby’

She also genuinely likes the song’s Beatlesque style and commented that her 88-year old-dad claps along to the tune.

Locsin describes herself as a major music fan (“I’m a 90s baby kasi”), calling Kurt Cobain her first love, and also listens to Aerosmith, the Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix , the latter prompting approving nods from Santos and Chan.

She expounds, “For me kasi, bawat moment sa buhay ko, merong soundtrack for that… (like) pag natatakot ako sa plane ride. Mayroon ako na 4,000 plus songs na”—she leans forward for emphasis—“binibili ko sa iTunes. Music is everything para sa akin, and bilang artist malaki yung tulong nito sa emotions.”
