The Marvel superhero blockbuster has become the first to rake in $25.2 million globally on its opening weekend without help from the China market.

It may only be able to claim the title of second biggest opening weekend in history on the standard cinema screen, but the latest Avengers instalment has broken one record.

Despite not opening in China until May 12, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" took $25.5 million globally at IMAX cinemas, making it the biggest opening weekend for a film in that format.

"The continued global success of the Avengers franchise is a remarkable feat and we congratulate Disney and Marvel for yet another astounding domestic opening in the Marvel Cinematic Universe," said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment.
