Christian Bale takes on the role of a biblical hero in 'Exodus: Gods and Kings'

We're used to seeing actor Christian Bale transform from film to film: since he caught our hearts as a kid in "Empire of the Sun" (1987), we have seen him shrink to skin and bones in "The Machinist" (2004), and then balloon with a beer belly in "American Hustle" (2013).

Perhaps another role Bale will always be remembered for is the caped crusader Batman, whom he played in three films: "Batman Begins" (2005), "The Dark Knight" (2008) and "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012).

This 2014, Bale returns to the silver screen via "Exodus: Gods and Kings," a biblical epic directed and produced by Ridley Scott, the man behind "Gladiator" and "Prometheus." Bale plays Moses, the man who rises up against his brother, the Egyptian pharaoh Ramses, played by Joel Edgerton, and frees 600,000 people from slavery.

Will Bale succeed in making us forget him as Bruce Wayne, and instead make us see him as Moses? How will his performance fare with that of Charlton Heston in "The Ten Commandments" (1956)?

"I cast him because I thought he would be the definition of Moses — he has the physicality and the sensitivity that you need for the role," Scott tells Yahoo Australia. "His research is meticulous. By the time we started filming, he knew more about Moses than anybody on set. I’d compare him to Russell (Crowe) in that way. His work ethic is fantastic and he does his research and then some. And he’s full of ideas."
