'Civilization: Beyond Earth' trailer shows off sinister AI

The latest trailer for "Civilization: Beyond Earth" shows off the thinking that marks out its Purity playstyle, with narration from AI character Master Control.

As one of three overall affinities that a player can align themselves with in this expansive sci-fi strategy, a 'Purity' civilization is least fond of adapting itself to its surrounds.

Instead, it champions terraforming and defensive prowess; as we see in the new trailer, shown at the Penny Arcade Expo, those values can translate into a propensity for aggressive action, bestowed here upon a nearby sea creature and a neighboring civilization will little apparent regret.

That's in preference to other philosophies that seek to make earth's migrants more adaptable to alien planets: those choosing the Supremacy have advantages when it comes to the use of cybernetic implants, while those subscribing to the Harmony model can adapt through the use of infused alien DNA.

Each option comes with distinct advantages, but those strengths can manifest as weaknesses; wartime pursuits may come with a burden too great to bear for even the victor.

Ninth in the series, the game is due October 24 and comes after several expansions for "Civilization V" on Windows PCs, Mac and Linux, as well as "Civilization Revolution 2" for iOS and Android, and the Facebook title "Civilization World."
