Figure skater mortgages house to represent Philippines

The country's lone representative to 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, figure skater Michael Christian Martinez, is praying to bring home a gold medal even if the government failed to support his bid.

Maria Theresa Martinez, his mother, said she has written to President Benigno Aquino III several times for financial support but failed to get a response. In an interview with Catholic Register, a newspaper circulated in Canada and the US, she said that in the end, the family of Martinez had to mortgage their house to support Michael Christian's chance to compete for the country.

"I don't even think anyone at the president's office knows there's a Filipino skating in the Olympics," Theresa said in that interview.

Theresa said they had their house mortgage to finance her son's travel costs for the international winter sports event.

"My house is mortgaged. It's a crazy investment," Theresa said.

Theresa said they are able to accompany Martinez in Sochi using the financial assistance they received from the Philippine Skating Union.

The 17-year-old Martinez admits that he lacks professional training and coaching, but was proud to carry the flag and, with prayers, hopes to get in to the final 24 figure skaters who will compete in Sochi so he can get into serious training for 2018. (Mary Rose A. Hogaza)

Beyonce’s #Flawless image is embroiled in controversy once again. On Wednesday, a web site called The Beyonce World leaked 224 allegedly raw photos of the musician. The images showed Bey in full makeup for the 2013 L’Oreal ad campaign — but with the kinds of “imperfections” we all have — beauty marks, bumps, creases. In the wake of Cindy Crawford’s unretouched photos, the images have been praised by critics of a beauty industry that sets impossibly high standards, standards that Queen Bey …
