Gladys takes a break from playing 'kontrabida'

Now playing a good and loving mother in ABS-CBN’s fantaserye “Wako Wako,” Gladys Reyes said that her new role is a welcome break from playing her usual “kontrabida” roles. It was a stereotype established when she played Judy Ann Santos’s rival in the 1993 series, “Mara Clara.”

Admitting that she has long wanted to portray a non-villainous character,  Gladys said, “Timing talaga. Siyempre, ina na rin naman ako sa totoong buhay, gusto ko rin naman yung proud ako na may maipapanood ako sa anak ko na hindi naman ako nananakit.”

She met members of the media at the press conference of “Wako Wako” recently. In the series, she plays the mother of MuyMuy (Yogo Singh) and wife of Vandolph Quizon.

“Ang role ko kasi dito, isang mapagmahal na asawa at ina, pero kapag ginalit ang anak ko at sinaktan, lumalabas yung pagiging palaban. Siyempre, nandoon pa rin yung touch na hindi paaapi bilang ina lalo na kapag anak ko ang sinasaktan,” she said.

Gladys is grateful to ABS-CBN for giving her the role, confessing that “kulang na lang maiyak ako.” She is also thankful to director Wenn Deramas “kasi lagi niya akong binibigyan ng markadong roles, gaya ng sa ‘Habang May Buhay.’”

Gladys also explained why she got carried away in her scene with Maricar de Mesa to the point where she accidentally hurt her co-star.

“Bago kasi umabot doon, timpi-timpi, so bagong-bago sa akin talaga iyon. Eh sa mga dati kong teleserye, mapagpatol talaga ako. Napuno na ako kumbaga,” Gladys began.

Accident on the set

So when the scene called for her to react to having her child hurt by Maricar, she lost control. “So, yung hablot ko sa buhok niya, hindi ko na siya nabigyan ng pagkakataon,” Gladys shared.

At the press conference, Maricar said Gladys apologized to her afterwards.

“So, ganoon nga ang naganap. Pero alam mo naman kapag trabaho. Kaya siguro kami nagugustuhan dati ni Judy Ann kasi wala kaming daya, never naming dinaya ang mga tao,” Gladys said.

“Wako Wako,” directed by Wenn Deramas, also stars Ai-Ai delas Alas, Yogo Singh, Malou de Guzman, Dennis Padilla, Carlos Agassi, Abby Bautista, Markki Stroem, Lizel Garcia, Eagle Riggs, DJ Durano and Franco Daza. It airs weekdays  before “TV Patrol.”
