The cult band's final performance will be shown at cinemas around the world on July 6, one day after the concert takes place in Chicago.

Demand for tickets to the July 5 Solider Field gig was so great that it sold out in minutes, leaving the Grateful Dead's legion of fans hugely frustrated both in the US and beyond.

To deal with this frustration, the band was already planning to offer US fans the option of watching the last gig as a pay-per-view broadcast and now things are going one step further with a special cinematic event.

Handled by CinemaLive, tickets for "Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of the Grateful Dead" will go on sale later this month and will see the final concert beamed via satellite into a host of movie theaters around the world on July 6.
