Heidi Klum: Models must ditch muffins

Heidi Klum says the first rule of modelling is that you can't eat muffins and pasta every day.

The German star has appeared on the covers of Vogue and Marie Claire and spent time as a coveted Angel for lingerie brand Victoria's Secret.

Her success is down to some home truths she learnt when starting out in the industry.

“I learnt that I couldn’t eat muffins and spaghetti bolognaise every day. I had to have great hair, great nails. I had to stop picking my pimples. I had to have enough sleep and be on time," she explained to British newspaper The Times.

Despite doing well now, the 39-year-old received a lot of criticism when she first started out.

Competing with fellow models Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell wasn't easy for Heidi.

“I wasn’t thin enough, tall enough, edgy enough,” she admitted.

“I was always the big commercial girl. I did hair campaigns. There were big-name models like Claudia and Naomi and I understood if I wanted to do cooler, more creative things I had to find her own path.”

Heidi juggles her career with parenthood and is mother to sons Henry and Johan and daughter Lou with her ex-husband Seal and also has daughter Leni from a previous relationship.

The body-conscious star tries to pass her good eating habits down to her children.

“I have four kids. I have to be [strict] otherwise they rule you because there are more of them,” she explained, adding she gives each chid $1 every morning if they drink a healthy smoothie she prepares.

“Some parents may think that’s wrong, but at least I know they’ve eaten something healthy.”
