'Hunger Games' takes worldwide box office by storm

The third "Hunger Games" installment debuts at the top of the worldwide box office with $275 million in earnings.

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" adapts the first half of the third and final book in Suzanne Collins’s popular series.

The movie, which follows Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) as the leader of a rebellion against a dystopian society, comes ahead of Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar," which grossed $85.1 million in its third weekend. The space quest starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway has so far earned $449.6 million.

Marking Disney's first animated movie with Marvel, "Big Hero 6" comes in third with $27.08 million. Having hit screens in the US, the movie has yet to be released in other territories.

Also only showing in US theaters, "Dumb and Dumber To," the follow-up to 1994's "Dumb and Dumber," slid to fourth place while still confirming the popularity of the dim-witted duo played by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. The movie earned $20.3 million.

Taking less that $20 million in revenues were Brad Pitt's drama "Fury" ($14.3 million), Chinese blockbuster "Rise of the Legend" ($11.9 million) and "Penguins of Madagascar" ($8.7 million), with the latter two only showing in China.

In eighth, David Fincher's "Gone Girl" takes another $5.19 million, with cumulative earnings coming in at $328.2 million.

Morten Tyldum's "Imitation Game" made a strong debut on the British market, enough for the Oscar-caliber movie take the ninth spot at the worldwide box office. It follows Benedict Cumberbatch as English mathematician Alan Turing, famous for deciphering German secret codes during WWII and for being the father of computer science.

Gina Prince-Bythewood's "Beyond the Lights" rounds out the top 10 with $2.6 million.
