Inaugural show announced for Damien Hirst's new London gallery

Artist Damien Hirst is set to open his Newport Street Gallery in London in October. Now, the gallery has revealed the space's inaugural exhibition: a major solo show of work by the late British abstract painter John Hoyland.

"Power Stations," which opens October 8 and runs through April 3, will showcase paintings the artist made from 1962 to 1982, a pivotal period that included his first solo exhibition on one end and a defining retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery on the other.

Described by Hirst as "by far the greatest British abstract painter," Hoyland was known for his bold use of color as well as scale and drew influence from American Abstract Expressionnists such as Rothko and Motherwell.

"His paintings always feel like a massive celebration of life to me," said Hirst.

Exclusively featuring works from Hirst's personal collection, the show will be the first major spotlight of Hoyland's works since his death in 2011.

The exhibition will occupy all six galleries that make up the Newport Street Gallery, which is located in Lambeth, south London and intends to present both single and group exhibitions, all featuring works from Damien Hirst's extensive personal art collection of more than 3,000 works.

The 37,000-square-foot space, which also includes a restaurant and a shop and features a large-scale LED screen on the building's exterior.

Under construction for the more than three years, the gallery has been a long-time goal of Hirst's. Entry will be free of charge.
