Indies lead Urian nominees

Independent films led the list of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino’s  2013 Gawad Urian

Brillante Mendoza’s film “Thy Womb,” which topbills Nora Aunor, bagged eight nominations  in 11 categories, including Best Film, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Music and Best Editing.
 
Many mainstream films recognized by other award-giving bodies,  such as “One More Try” and “El Presidente,”  failed to get an Urian nomination.

“Hindi naman sa ginusto namin na maging indie awarding group. Kundi sa mga pelikulang napanuod namin, ang nangingibabaw ay yung mga pelikulang ginawa sa labas ng studio system. Hindi nakaabot sa pamantayan sa kasalukuyanhg miyembro ang totality ng (ibang) pelikula,” National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera said at the press conference in ABS-CBN compound on Tuesday, April 30.
 
Manunuri president Tito Valiente  explained  why there are too many nominees in other categories.  There are 16 nominees  for Best Cinematography,  while Best Screenplay has 14.
 
“Sa dami ng napanuod namin, ang hirap i-trim down sa maliit. Parang nasasayangan kaming i-drop yung iba. Maganda rin kasi ang daming pagpipilian sa process of selection. Meron din naming kaunti sa ibang categories,” Tito said.
 
Gawad Urian once again partnered with cable channel Cinema One, which produced the awards night in the previous years.

The 2013 Gawad Urian Awards will be held Thursday, June 18, at the Rockwell Tent, and will be aired on Cinema One shortly thereafter.
