[Interview] Voice of Korea’s Winner Son Seung Yeon, “Thank You For Choosing Me On My Voice”

The journey that began on February 10 through the first episode of Mnet’s The Voice of Korea has come to a conclusion after three months.

On May 11 at Seoul’s Kyunghee University Peace Hall, the final round of The Voice of Korea unfolded in a live broadcast where twenty year old Son Seung Yeon and her outstanding talent beat out the competition to crown her as the winner.

On this episode Son Seung Yeon sang a new song Ugly Duckling as well as Yoon Bok Hee’s Everyone in front of some 3,000 individuals. Her explosive vocal abilities and emotional delivery earned her yet another standing ovation, and finally, made her The Voice of Korea’s first winner.

Following the live finale of The Voice of Korea, enews met with Son Seung Yeon.

“First of all, I am so thankful. I am so lucky there is a Voice of Korea. Though I have many things I lack, I’m so thankful there is a program that only evaluates one’s voice and I want to say I am so thankful to everyone.”

Son Seung Yeon could be seen beaming and unable to hide her happiness, and of course, this only made sense. Just like Voice of Korea’s catch phrase, ‘One will only win by his or her voice’, the audition program had discovered a hidden gem.

In this very competition, the twenty year old Son Seung Yeon became the winner. As she was an eliminated competitor in last year’s Top Band on KBS, the win is sure to be that much sweeter.

“For me this is very different and special. Since I love to sing I’ve entered a lot of competitions but there hasn’t been many times I’ve placed first. There was one time I won first in a big competition and the rest I always lost out. But through this program I improved tremendously. I didn’t improve and then appear on Voice of Korea but rather this program improved me. I think that’s why I didn’t receive any interest in the first half of this season but as we entered the latter half, the attention I received grew. That’s why I’m even more thankful.”

Son Seung Yeon didn’t forget to thank her coach, Shin Seung Hoon.

“Shin Seung Hoon coach taught everything including the minor details from the emotional delivery to explanations about each letters of every song. It’s through Shin Seung Hoon coach’s teaching that I was able to make it to here.”

Just as she said, Son Seung Yeon and her coach, Shin Seung Hoon, were evidently a close pair on that night too. Even during their interviews with the press before the start of the final live episode, the two showed wonderful chemistry.

Perhaps it′s because Shin Seung Hoon is known for taking good care of his students but the two looked even more close.

“I didn’t anticipate a win at all so I sang with my heart cleared (smile). I think Ugly Duckling lyrics, which contained my personal feelings, was received well by the audience. Though I lack many things, I’m thankful they liked my voice and selected me.”

On this day, Son Seung Yeon received 100 million won in cash, a 200 million won recording contract and a Nissan Cube car. She will also embark on a trip to the U.K. and the U.S. with Shin Seung Hoon on a music trip.
