Jake Cuenca on girlfriend: Sobrang suwerte ko!
Jake Cuenca is deeply in love. His eyes light up when he talks about Fil-Aussie girlfriend Chanel Olive Thomas.
When he opens his mouth to describe her, you get the feeling that the Yahoo Celebrity 2014 Male Contrabida of the Year nominee is talking about an angel sent down from heaven to please him on earth.
“Sobrang swerte ko at nakilala ko ang girlfriend ko. Super saya at enjoy ako sa relationship. Hindi namin pinag-uusapan ang taping o pelikula. We talk about life,” Jake told the press in an interview before he went on stage for HBC’s National Makeover Day at Trinoma, where he sang before a jampacked crowd.
Life outside work
His girlfriend bolstered Jake’s belief that life is not all about work. It’s about being yourself and being accepted for it.
When he’s with his girlfriend, Jake is not an actor. He’s a human being who needs to be loved and to love in return.
“Hindi ko kailangan patunayan ang sarili ko. Pag artista ka may konting leverage sa panliligaw. Ako, linalabas ko ang pagiging celebrity ko sa panliligaw ko sa kanya.”
It helps that Jake’s new love is non-showbiz (she arrived in the Philippines three months ago) and has no idea of how popular he is in the country. She doesn’t see him as a celebrity but as a normal guy who gets pleased as Punch when she bravely shrugs off her bashers.
“Kung ibang babae yon, siguro umatras na,” Jake observes.
Hurt for girlfriend
He admits feeling bad when people say hurtful things about his girlfriend on social media. So he tries to defend her as best as he can without sounding rude.
The two met through Jake’s Australian batchmate in high school. The sweethearts got to know each other better in romantic Bali, where Jake asked the pretty model if she’d like to be his girlfriend.
It’s been two months of sheer bliss for Jake since.

Instead of taking it against them, Chanel Olive is flattered that people think she and Jessy Mendiola, Jake’s former object of affection, resemble each other.
“Gandang ganda siya kay Jessy,” says Jake.
Speaking of Jessy, why did he stop courting her after being so vocal about his intentions to do so?
“We have the same manager. So para kaming brother and sister. Saka busy kami pareho. Araw-araw ang trabaho sa Ikaw Lamang (the ABS-CBN drama series which is nominated for Teleserye of the Year at the Yahoo Celebrity Awards 2014),” Jake replied.
No marriage plans yet
The guy wants to visit Australia to get to know his girlfriend’s parents. Jake is so protective of the relationship, he doesn’t want to reveal what pet names they have for each other.
But he thinks two months of being in a relationship is not enough for them to even talk about marriage.
“Hindi pa naming ganoon kakilala ang isa’t isa.”
The thing is, Jake has told the world he’s in madly in love. Everyone will be watching how the relationship progresses from there.
