Jamie Oliver teams up with Time Out magazine

Jamie Oliver on YouTube

British food celebrity Jamie Oliver is launching a print edition of his YouTube channel in partnership with Time Out magazine.

It’s an interesting strategy, given that the media mogul already publishes a monthly food magazine around the world with "Jamie."

But if the pilot project with Time Out London is successful, the strategy could expand internationally.

In partnering with the free weekly London magazine, Oliver is hoping to expand his audience to the publication’s 465,000 readers who also happen to fit the channel’s target demographic -- young, urban locals and visitors with a pulse on the city and trends.

“For me, sometimes there’s nothing better than physically flicking through the pages of a good mag, and I love the fact that digital and print can collide so seamlessly,” Oliver said in a statement.

The 24-page supplement will be tucked into the pages of the April 28 edition, featuring recipes, news and columns from Food Tube personalities such as ‘Food Busker’ John Quilter, Anna Jones and Cupcake Jemma.

If the strategy proves successful, collaborations could expand to Time Out’s international editions. The brand publishes magazines in 35 markets including Melbourne, Beijing and New York.

Though Oliver may be a household name around the world thanks to his beginnings as a TV chef, YouTube has birthed its own breed of powerful food personalities and entrepreneurs.

Laura Vitale of Laura in the Kitchen, for instance, boasts 1.66 million subscribers on her YouTube channel. By comparison, Oliver’s Food Tube has 1.47 million followers.

Another popular food channel and Oliver rival is Sorted Food, a group of London chef friends who have amassed 1.14 million followers.

Both channels have also parlayed their social media successes into cookbooks of their own: "Laura in the Kitchen" will be published in the fall by Clarkson Potter, while "Sorted for Beginners" was published in 2012.

The Food Tube supplement will be published monthly as of April.
