Joel Robuchon and Rick Bayless snatch up .rest and .bar domain names

In a sign of its popularity, some of the biggest chefs, restaurant and brands around the world have made early dibs on domain restaurant-specific domain names ending in .rest and .bar including titan Joel Robuchon and Rick Bayless.

After a month-long ‘land rush’ that offered early adopters like restaurateurs, chefs, and investors first dibs, the results are in, and it looks like a successful run judging by the shortlist of big shot names that have signed on.

They include French chef titan Joel Robuchon, whose restaurant empire spans Paris, London, Las Vegas and Singapore, as well as Rick Bayless, known for his authentic Mexican restaurants and TV appearances.

Likewise, internationally recognized dining destinations and brands like Geranium in Denmark (two Michelin stars); Mocoto in Sao Paulo, Brazil; upscale steakhouse chain Smith and Wollensky, Harry’s Bar, Wynn Resorts and champagne house Moet Hennessy have also grabbed addresses featuring the domain names.

What does that mean for consumers?

The ability to instantly identify a restaurant or bar by their web address suffix and a re-adjustment from punching in the habitual .com domain ending.

Other recently launched food-related domain endings also include .organic, .wine and .vin.

Beginning Monday, July 14, the .rest and .bar domains will enter the general availability, or first-come, first-serve purchasing phase.
