John Malkovich debuts as Blackbeard in 'Crossbones' trailer

NBC has uploaded the first trailer for "Crossbones," the new period drama that will take viewers back to the 18th century and to New Providence in the Bahamas, a hotbed of pirate activity.

Slated to premiere Friday, May 30, "Crossbones" will focus on Captain Edward Teach, the leader of the ragtag band of pirates, thieves and other outlaws living on the island. Played by John Malkovich, the historical figure is better known by his nickname: Blackbeard.

Among the pirate leader's many enemies is Tom Lowe, an assassin sent to kill him. But Lowe changes his plans when he comes to admire Blackbeard and his philosophy.

"Crossbones" was created by British writer Neil Cross, who penned the English crime series "Luther," headlined by Idris Elba. David Slade ("Twilight 3") helmed the first episode.
