KZ Tandingan: I’m straight

Don’t think KZ Tandingan is a lesbian just because she has a different kind of swagger when performing and her hair is short. The singer herself said she’s not.

“Palagi kong nakukuha iyon (speculation on gender). ‘Tomboy ka ba?’ Being lesbian and tomboy are different terms. Mahilig ako sa mga damit na panglalaki, kasi mas komportable ako doon. Pero I’m straight, super straight,” KZ said at the press conference for her Valentine’s concert “KZ 4 U” in Crowne Plaza.

The “X Factor Philippines” champion, who is reportedly dating a musician, feels hurt when people think she will come out as lesbian the way Charice did in 2013.

Not doing a Charice

“I get that a lot of times. Kapag ganoon, I get offended. Everytime sinasabi nila na ‘Susunod na kay Charice.’ Sobrang offensive naman iyon para sa tao. Kung ano man yung sexual preference ni Ms. Charice, it has nothing to do with her side as a singer. If sasabihin nila, susunod kay Charice (sa career), why not? Sa na-attain ni Charice sa career niya, why not? Pero just because of the hair, you judge people.”

Before coming out two years ago, Charice sported different hairstyles until she chose to maintain her now short do.

KZ shared that she tries to shrug off intrigues because she knows herself.

“As long as I know who the real me, as long as my family knows who I am, basta alam ko kung sino ako, iyon lang ang importante sa akin.”

In love with work

KZ adds that her hairstyle has nothing to do with the status of her love life.

“Mine is totally different. Nothing to do with being heartbroken or pagiging in love. Siguro in love with my work. I want people to see the real me kaya ako nagdecide na magpagupit kasi ito yung pinakadrastic na nakita ng mga tao.”

What is she looking for in a man?

“Mabait, close sa family, God-fearing,” KZ replied.

No rush

Although she’s seeing someone, KZ is not yet in a rush to be in a relationship.

“I’ve been through all the stages, pero I’ve never been in an official relationship. Pero I’ve been there sa mga stages na iyon. This time, I’m at the first stage. Pero wala pang label. We’re just enjoying each other’s company. Pareho naamn kaming hindi nagmamadali.”

KZ feels pressured other concerts are competing with her Valentine’s Day show. However, she promised to give a more intimate kind of performance.

Different stages of love

“The songs will tackle different stages of love, like loving someone, being heartbroken and also moving on.”

“KZ 4 U,” which also features Jimmy Marquez, will be held at the Grand Ballroom of Crowne Plaza on February 14.
