Lectures on filmmaking coming soon to a school near you

Boots Anson-Roa talks on the art of acting in the University Caravan lecture series at the Letran auditorium last August 2.

Student filmmakers, this one's for you.

Francis Tolentino, chairman of the Metro Manila Development Authority, organizer of the annual Metro Manila Flmfest, announced that filmmakers are coming to universities for a whole day free forum on various aspects of filmmaking.

Last Saturday, August 2, the group was in Letran for the lecture series also known as the University Caravan. Next stops are Festival Mall on Saturday, August 16 and the University of the Philippines Film Institute on Monday, August 18.

“This crash course aims to help aspiring student filmmakers know the ins and outs of moviemaking,” Maan ilustre, member of the Metro Manila Filmfest (MMFF) New Wave committee, says.

Lecturers

The list of lecturers is impressive: Boots Anson-Roa on acting; Ida Tiongson (producer of the 2013 MMFF entry “San Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir”) on funding productions; Patricia Coronado, juan.com.ph fashion director for Character Styling for Movies; film director Zig Dulay for Making Interesting Storylines and Ricky Orellana for animation.

More good news – prizes in store for winners of the Best New Wave films are worth aiming for. Big prizes are in store for winners in the four categories of the The New Wave section: Full Length, Animation, Student Shorts and Cinephone.

A P300,000 cash prize will go to the winner of the Best Picture, full feature category. The winner of the “Special Jury” prize will get P200,000 cash. The Best Picture, Animation section, will get P100,000 cash.

The Best Picture for Student Shorts will get P50,000 while P25,000 is allotted for the special awards.

Each of the six winners in the Cinephone competition will get P25,000 and paid internships from Viva Films, Scenema Conceptand Quantum Films.

Entries in the Full Length category must have a minimum running time of 75 minutes and must have been completed from 2013 onwards. Deadline for submission of entries is September 4.

Student shorts for student filmmakers, on the other hand, must have a maximum 20 minutes running time and filmed within 2014. Deadline of submission is October 4.

Entries in the Animation category must have a maximum running time of 12 minutes and completed from 2013 onwards.

Cinephone competition

Meanwhile, the Cinephone competition for high school and college students revolves around the theme “Pagbangon Pagkalipas ng Kalamidad” to show the Filipinos' strength amidst calamities. Deadline for entries is October 4. Sixty videos will be chosen as finalists.
