New Lego game: it's online and massively multiplayer

There's a new lego game on the way but it's not a movie tie-in, nor is it a Minecraft partnership -- it's a Massively Multiplayer Online game based on the Lego Minifigures franchise.

Funcom is in charge of development, with adult MMOs Age of Conan and Anarchy Online under its belt, and The Secret World due for release on July 3.

Both Anarchy Online and Age of Conan have free-to-play options, as is current work-in-progress Pets vs Monsters, which bodes well for this new Lego MMO.

The previous large-scale Lego MMO, Lego Universe, was released in October 2010, but shut down in January 2012 after barely more than a year online.

Difficulty issues, cost of subscription, a constricted free-to-play mode, and cumbersome player interactions helped scupper Lego Universe's voyage, along with the allure of other online attractions: Minecraft, Moshi Monsters, Club Penguin, Angry Birds and a plethora of free Facebook games.
