Controversies  -- mostly about his sexuality – have hounded Martin del Rosario as far as three years ago and  continue to rear their ugly head until now.  But  cool and calm Martin del Rosario never went on national television to explain himself nor broached the topic for the press to explore.

“I never felt I had to explain myself to haters na nagkakalat ng mga bagay na yon sa internet,” he says. “Kung pinatulan ko sila, anong magagawa non? Matutuwa sila at lalaki pa yon.”

The issue – that he has a handsome boyfriend – would crop up every time Martin has a show.  But he refuses to get affected and dignify the rumor.

The issue was magnified when  a photo of Martin sitting side-by-side with a commercial model appeared online.  The truth, Martin says, is that the photos of two women standing behind them at that time was deleted.  So it appeared that Martin and the commercial model --  with their rippling muscles in full display -- were  by their lonesome at that time.

The rumor affected Martin’s mother, though.

“Tinatanong siya ng friends niya,”  explains Martin.

So he had to reassure her that everything is a figment of the imagination.

To the rumor that someone saw him and the model in the picture together in the gym, Martin has a ready answer: “Ang huling punta ko sa gym ay yung nag-‘Pintada’ (the defunct TV drama series he starred in) ako.”

Neither did he spend a day in Boracay with the same guy recently, because Martin insists his latest trip to the island  was as far back as Holy Week.

Having a girlfriend

Would having a girlfriend put a stop those gay rumors?

Martin won’t resort to that kind of  'solution'.

“Hindi naman ako pressured magka-girlfriend mawala lang ito.”

Besides, his blessings this year far outweigh the baseless rumors.  Martin calls 2012 the best year for him so far.

It all started with the soap “Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin,” which got extended to February 2012.  Then came a short but powerful participation in E-Boy.  Three intense portrayals in “Maalala Mo Kaya” – the latest of which will air in  ABS-CBN on Saturday, Dec. 15  also came along.

The award-winning actor admits comedy is not his turf.

“Hndi ako spontaneous kaya mahihirapan ako sa comedy.  Gusto ko pinag-aaralan talaga ang script.”

The BNY Jeans endorser hopes to sustain the upward swing of his career in 2012 but knows he shouldn’t expect too much.  Six years in showbiz taught Martin that plans can go wrong anytime, even if everything seems to be  green and go.

Natural high

Still, Martin hopes for the best, knowing that acting is where he gets his natural high.

If he could be an actor and a star at the same time, like his idol, John Lloyd Cruz, Martin would be delirious with joy.

“Hindi ako naging artista dahil gusto ko maging sikat o dumami ang fans ko.  But if I become a star, why not?  Bonus na yon,” he relates.

After all, Martin is only 20.  He has a long way to go.  Most importantly, he has the will and the talent to see his dreams come true.
