Mies van der Rohe house to be transformed by light and sound

One of the US's architectural jewels could be set for a dramatic transformation thanks to into a light and video installation if one design studio has its way.

Farnworth House, designed by the famous modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is set to be bathed in "a composition of light and sound" by creative group Luftwerk.

The group, which specializes in light and sound installations, is hoping to help the public discover the Illinois structure in a completely different way with the temporary "INsite" exhibition, by using the building as a blank canvas for its multimedia experiment.

After carrying out a test in 2012, the studio found that exterior projections along the building's lines gave the impression that the structure was floating in darkness.

Inside the house, light was used to play with the space, using myriad reflections to make it appear larger.

If its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter proves successful, the group will launch the installation in the fall of 2014.

Luftwerk has already created similar installations for Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater building, the Cloud Gate in Chicago and the Chicago Cultural Center.
