O'Keeffe, Rauschenberg, Bacon on Tate program for 2016
Tate has announced its 2016 exhibition schedule across all of its UK museums, with highlights including the first posthumous retrospective of Robert Rauschenberg and the largest display of works by Paul Nash for a generation.
In London, Tate Modern is planning a summer exhibition (July 6 - October 30) of the American modernist painter Georgia O'Keeffe -- the first dedicated, large-scale exhibition of her work in the UK for more than 20 years.
That will be followed in the fall by the Rauschenberg retrospective (December 1, 2016 - April 2, 2017), organized with New York's MoMA and featuring the American artist's well-known painting/sculpture-hybrid "Combines" as well as graphic screen prints depicting the assassinated US president JFK.
Tate Britain is planning an examination of the British painter Paul Nash (October 26, 2016 - March 5, 2017), including landscapes of southern England and a look at his involvement in modernism -- particularly surrealism.
"Art and Photography from the Pre-Raphaelites to the Modern Age" (May 11 - September 26), meanwhile, will cover pioneering early photographers and their relationship to Pre-Raphaelite, Aesthetic and Impressionist artists.
Tate's reach extends far beyond the capital, and on of 2016's highlights is the exhibition "Francis Bacon: Invisible Rooms" (May 18 - September 18) at Tate Liverpool, for which around 35 large-scale paintings plus works on paper will examine the architectural motif of his art.
The Tate St Ives gallery in Cornwall will be closed until May 21, 2016, part of a project to expand and improve the space that will be completed in 2017. At its reopening, the gallery will present the dual exhibitions "Sea & Studio" (May 21 - October 2), followed by the presentation of a film by the British artists Rosalind Nashashibi and Lucy Skaer about Paul Gauguin's voyage to Tahiti, shown as part of a larger exhibition of works by Gauguin as well as earlier artistic depictions of Tahiti (October 15, 2016 - January 8, 2017).
