Oscar-winning 'Lord of the Rings' cinematographer Andrew Lesnie dead

Andrew Lesnie, the Oscar-winning cinematographer whose career included all of the fabled "Lord of the Rings" films and "The Hobbit," died suddenly on Monday, according to the The Hollywood Reporter. He was 59.

The Australian-born filmmaker won the Academy Award in 2002 for Peter Jackson's first "Lord of the Rings" film, "The Fellowship of the Ring."

Lesnie's final movie was Russell Crowe's "The Water Diviner," which was filmed in his home country.

On Twitter, Crowe said, "Devastating news from home. The master of the light, genius Andrew Lesnie has passed on."

Lesnie also shot the remake of "King Kong" (2005), "The Lovely Bones" (2009) and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (2011) during his career.
