MANILA, Philippines - Philippine bet Janine Tugonon has been hard at work in the recent preliminary competitions of the 61st Miss Universe beauty pageant held at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
Janine recently joined the 88 other stunning contestants from around the globe to show off their catwalk skills during the various pre-pageant competitions, according to a report by ABS-CBN North America News Bureau Bev Llorente.
For the evening gown competition, Janine paraded onstage wearing a floor-length, sheer powder blue Alfredo Barraza piece. The event was followed by the swimsuit competition wherein the candidates flaunted their curves and their flawless skins.
Adding some modern twist, the outfit was actually made of sheer fabric in strategic places like the arms and legs. Aside from the traditional malong, which she wore as a sash, Janine added a princess-like oomph to her costume by donning what seemed to be her Binibining Pilipinas Universe crown.
The report quoted Janine as saying that the costume was selected "...kasi 'yun talaga 'yung bagay sa akin na pinagpilian."
Tess Tugonon, Janine's mother who flew to Las Vegas with her, had goose bumps when her lovely daughter strutted onstage.
"Actually, not really nervousness pero parang 'yung so proud of my daughter na talagang I'm having goose bumps every time she walks the stage. Talagang iba ang projection niya," said Tess.
The results of the preliminary competitions will be announced during the coronation night of the pageant, which will be aired live on ABS-CBN on Dec. 20.
In an earlier report on abs-cbnNEWS.com, Shamcey, who's currently in the US not only to support her co-Filipina beauty queen but also to become Miss Universe's "On The Scene" correspondent, shared which finalist Janine named as her "biggest competitor" in the tilt.
"Sabi sa 'kin ni Janine, feeling niya contender, and based on the pictures, si Ms. Venezuela," Shamcey related pertaining to South American beauty Irene Esser Quintero.
According to Shamcey, Janine shouldn't feel rattled by this since no one can really foresee how the pageant would go until coronation night.
"Nung nandoon ako, lahat din naman ng girls, parang Barbie dolls, so it's really hard to say who will get it. Kasi may time na favorite at the start, pero she doesn't really make it to the finals night," the 26-year-old beauty-queen-turned-TV-personality said.
She continued, "'Yung iba naman na hindi napapansin, suddenly... Like si Ms. Angola (Leila Lopes), before, she was never really... We never thought of her as a threat talaga. But during the final night, she wowed the audience and she won."
What's important, as Shamcey points out, is for Janine to cherish and enjoy being part of the pageant especially since it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
