A pop-up 'Pignic' is coming to London in May

Don’t be fooled by the name of London’s latest, animal-themed pop-up event. For there will be no bacon at the ‘Pignic.’

Nay, because at the pop-up event in May, the guests of honor will be the piglets themselves, tiny micro pigs that have become all the rage among pet owners who mistakenly believe that the petite porkers will stay small enough to fit into a teacup.

Expect lots of squealing at The London Pop-Up Pignic from both piglets and people alike, with guests invited to mingle with a litter of teacup pigs, as they’re also called.

And in line with the cat and owl-themed cafés that have also become all the rage in London, the aim of the Pignic is likewise to raise awareness about animal welfare, this time for prospective teacup pig owners who may not realize that the adorable baby piglets will, undoubtedly, swell up to the size of a large dog, much to the chagrin of owners who were told otherwise.

In addition to food, pig-themed cocktails and activities, participants will be educated about micro pigs and the realities of micro pig ownership by breeders PetPiggies.

After enjoying widespread popularity in Japan, the concept of cat and owl-themed cafes have traveled overseas to the UK, France, the US, Asia and Canada. The Yelp-associated Pignic in London, however, marks a new breed of animal-themed pop-ups.

Tickets for the Pignic are £30 ($45 USD). The event will be held at The Proud Archivist, a hybrid gallery, restaurant and cafe on Regent’s Canal May 21-25.
