How to get rainbow hair for summer 2015

The rainbow hair trend has been on our radar for a while now, and with summer just around the corner it's only going to get bigger.

Colorful hair can be a great way to get a more playful look, whether you opt for straight-up pastel or more of an ombré effect. Actress Kaley Cuoco brought the trend back into the spotlight this week when she revealed a new bubblegum pink do with matching eyebrows on her Instagram account, but other celebrities driving the trend include Kesha, who unveiled her lime green tresses earlier this month. Hilary Duff, Lily Allen and Katy Perry have also been known to crack out the hair dye in lavender purples or rose pinks.

If you want to recreate the look at home then you might benefit from a few tips. Remember that the results can differ wildly depending on the starting color of your hair. Blondes should pay particular attention to this as lots of yellow can complicate things, so if you're looking to dye your hair mint green, for example, you'll actually need to use a blue dye.

Hair should normally be clean and dry when applying the color to it. Vlogger Anhoppa recommends mixing your dye with a white, silicone-free conditioner before starting, although certain brands can be applied straight to the hair, so read the instructions thoroughly.

Vlogger Jade The Libra suggests combing your hair into four different sections to make the process as ordered and easy as possible (she also advocates for asking someone to help you out with the back of your head).

Apply the dye to your roots first using a brush, and pull the color through for as long as you'd like. Do this across all the sections, before moving on to the second shade if you're going for multiple colors. Hair Artist Guy Tang points out that when applying color to the lengths it's a good idea to paint the dye onto the lengths and rub it in with your fingers to make sure that it's good and penetrated. And if you're looking for extra va-va-voom, why not add some colorful hair extensions into the mix? See Tasha Leelyn's tutorial for tips on this.
