“Philippines, one day…soon!” the post read.

Then, another tease: “Anyone know what the weather is like in the Philippines in April?”

Online music portal pinoytuner.com quickly got the hint.

Reunited for Yolanda benefit

That was the time pinoytuner started negotiating to handle the forthcoming back-to-back-to-back shows of the reunited 90s alterna-rockers Moonpools & Caterpillars. Called D’ Return Op D’ Comeback, the shows are set on April 8 and 11 at the Amber Ultra Lounge at The Fort, and on April 9 at The Outpost in Cebu.

“Technically, Moonpools & Caterpillars disbanded some 15 years ago,” said Joey Dizon, content director at pinoytuner.com.

“They reunited in July last year and then Haiyan (Yolanda) happened and early this year they did a benefit show for the victims of the super typhoon. They found out they still had it in them to play music together.”

Homecoming

The Manila concerts, he said, “will be a homecoming for the band to the Philippines.”

The band will tour with its original members intact: singer Kimi Ward Encarnacion, guitarist Jay Jay Encarnacion, bassist Tim De Pala and drummer Gugut Salgado.

“They’re all Filipinos and most of them would visit the Philippines every now and then. This time, it will be all four members coming home not only to their relatives but also to their music fans,” Dizon said.

Critical acclaim

Over three albums released in the 90s, Moonpools & Caterpillars made waves on the charts, the radio and in concert with popular hits like Soon,” “Hear,” and “Summertime.”

The albums themselves received critical acclaim with the group and their sound being described by allmusic.com as the “the consummate Southern Californian band: a multi-ethnic and -stylistic mix of boisterous and cheerful alterna-pop: a multi-ethnic and -stylistic mix of boisterous and cheerful alterna-pop.”

The Filipino-American foursome was as much a fixture of the era as their more celebrated peers, Blake Babies, Liz Phair and Veruca Salt.

Dizon stresses, “This not part of a tour behind a new album or whatnot. As far as I know, each of them has his own individual music project. This is just a homecoming for them as a band.”
