Richard Yap’s new career path
Richard Yap is taking a new path in his career – that of a recording artist. He has just released his self-titled album, which carries the single “Don’t Know What to Do, Don’t Know What to Say.”
“My ambition before was to just be a lounge singer. Para sa akin, okay na iyon because I didn’t think I could make it in the recording industry because I had no background with acting and singing,” Richard said during his album launch in Palacio de Maynila on Thursday, September 26.
Richard is inspired by country singer Kenny Rogers.
“He started singing at the age of 50. So, I said, ‘May pag-asa pa pala ako.’ So,this is a dream come true for me.”
Richard cannot say if he prefers acting to singing and vice-versa. But he says singing is his first love.
“I didn’t imagine myself as an actor before. Mas gusto ko talagang kumanta dati even before I got into acting.”
Facing criticism
Is Richard ready to face criticism, especially from those who are not convinced actors can become singers?
“Yes. Everyone has their own opinion. Meron talagang ayaw, meron talagang gusto. They can say what they want but let's all be decent people.”
Richard’s song “High” fits what he feels at the moment.
“High on everything that's happening right now, high for all the blessings.”
Richard also felt honored when Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chair Francis Tolentino appealed to Star Cinema to reconsider its decision to withdraw the movie version of “Please Be Careful with My Heart.”
“If we do the movie, we'll tape six times a week. So, baka hindi na namin kakayanin. Yung iba kasi humihina na yung resistensiya dahil sa pagod and puyat.”
The cast and production team didn’t want to do a half-baked movie, so they felt relieved when the movie was pulled out from the Metro Manila Filmfest as official entry.
“The production decided na wag na lang ituloy baka hindi maganda yung kakalabasan. We wanted to do it. (But) for us, mas gusto namin hindi na matuloy kesa magpalabas kami na parang pinilit lang namin. We want the people watching na sulit din naman yung ibabayad nila sa movie. For us okay na din, maybe we'll just do something later on.”
More of a relief
Richard added, “For us it was more of a relief kasi nahihirapan talaga kami kasi ang hirap pag puyat ka parati. Baka hindi mo na mabigay yung magandang performance na ini-expect ng mga tao.”
Richard wants to work with Anne Curtis and Dawn Zulueta someday. He also wants to explore acting and play different roles.
“Every actor doesn't want to be typecast na ito lang ang kayang gawin. We have to choose the right roles. Kung sa tingin ko na hindi naman bagay sa akin, hindi ko tatanggapin.”
