Rock stars jam with surprised contestants in college band competition

What if you were just a college band and then your rock star heroes decided to jam with you?

That’s exactly what happened to the college band Caution back in 2010.

They were among the finalists in Greenhills Sessionistas, the annual band competition organized by Greenhills Shopping Center as a way for kids to promote staying in school, among others.

Idol moment

Caution was about to play when they were asked to stop by the judges. The band thought nothing of it, maybe just a technical glitch that needed fixing.

Suddenly, Karl Roy appeared on stage and said he was singing with them.

In disbelief, the band had no choice but to step up and play their damndest. It was THE Karl Roy, after all, and messing up wasn’t a choice since they were in a band competition and the judges were waiting to see how they’d react in the situation.

Rock stars who’ve jammed with amateur bands

It’s the curveball or twist, if you will, that’s become the trademark of Greenhills Sessionistas, now on its seventh year and happening from September to October at Tiendesitas in Pasig.

Through the years, many musicians such as Mike Elgar of Rivermaya, the late Papadom of Tropical Depression, Lougee Basabas, Megan Aguilar and Cooky Chua of Color It Red have all surprised competitors on stage by performing with them.

The organizers of the event makes the dream of performing with one’s idols come true—and in the process becomes a gauge of whether finalists are cut out to perform alongside the greats.

Applications till August 31

In fact, the “twist” fits squarely into the name of the competition. The term “sessionista”
usually describes musicians with great skill who perform in different bands and who can adapt to any musical situation.

Now, Greenhills Sessionistas is again looking for bands whose members are in high school or college. Deadline for applications is until August 31 only. Details are on the Greenhills official website and Facebook page.

Judges for this year’s competition are Yahoo blogger and Peso Movement’s Francis Brew, the Jerks’ Chicoy Pura and Imago’s Zach Lucero.
