Slater’s first-time jitters

PBB Big Winner Slater Young attends David Guetta Live in Manila concert, held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay on 10 October 2012.

Newbie actor Slater Young admits feeling nervous over his first teleserye, “A Beautiful Affair.” But he is grateful to his director and co-stars for guiding him.

“I’m nervous on how the public would perceive me. I’m still getting used to it. This is my first time acting so I’m still getting used to it bilang mabigat ‘yung role ko and sila lahat magagaling na actors,” Slater said in an interview at the press conference of “A Beautiful Affair,” where he stars with John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo and John Estrada.

It is Slater’s first big project since his stint in the reality show “Pinoy Big Brother (PBB).”

Challenging role

Since he’s a newcomer, Slater thought his would just be a light role.

“I was expecting I was going to be given na role na pa-cute-cute lang, goody-goody lang.”

Instead, he plays the conflict-ridden Harry Reyes, cousin of Bea’s character. “Magandang training,” Slater points out.

The PBB winner admits he sometimes forgets his lines, but his director and co-stars don’t take it against him.

“They’re very patient with me. Alam naman nila na baguhan ako. They take time talaga na, ‘Ganito ang gawin mo ha.’ Pati si John Estrada, ‘Okay lang iyon.’ Kasi I keep on forgetting my lines, kasi pag sinabing ‘Action’ diretso nerbyos ako. Sabi niya, ‘Okay lang iyan. As you get along you’ll get comfortable.’”

Slater added that Bea sees herself in him when she was just a newbie.

“Si Bea, she takes things right. Parang, 'Ganyan talaga lahat, dumaan kami sa ganyan.’ So, di ba, parang ang laking lakas ng loob to know that people are on your side.”

Acting first

As a result, Slater learned to be more dedicated and to take his craft more seriously.

“Kaeksena ko palagi si Bea so nakikita ko kung paano sila nagpe-prepare. Nakikita ko how they take acting seriously. Parang noong pumasok ako sa (showbiz), 'Ah, acting-acting-an lang iyon.' You read, say your lines, then okay na. Ngayon, parang nakikita ko na hindi ganyan. Noong nakita ko si Bea, si John, (I saw) how they take it seriously, how they rehearse, how they prepare. Nakukuha ko na ganun pala yung dedication na kailangan para sa pag-arte,” Slater said.

His eyes are now focused on acting.

“Sobrang masaya ako sa ginagawa ko ngayon. I enjoy acting. I love it. Parang gustong-gusto kong matutunan ang acting.”
